These chalkboards have a plastic, almost bumpy feel to them. The chalkboard is extremely thin (which can be a plus for children, since they are light and not dangerous during earthquakes and such). The chalkboard writes just fine, though, despite the odd not-chalkboard feel, the white chalk shows up bright and clear on the chalkboard.I was expecting more of an authentic chalkboard feel, but if you're looking for just a black board to use chalk on, this is an okay, lightweight board to purchase.
